It's been a really busy week with lots of things going on and projects on the go, but this lead me to start analysing whether or not I'm using my time as effectivey as possible.
One the main ways in which I undertake business development activity is through netowrking and I must have received at least 20 emails this week with details of various networking events in Leeds, Harrogate and Manchester. I know people who spend their lives attending these events and yes, they are nice, there's usually something to eat and drink but is it time well spent? My persoanl opinion is a resounding 'yes' AS LONG AS you go to the RIGHT event!
This year I've made a conscious decision that my networking time and energy are only going to be put in to two paid memberships that I'm part of - BNI and Business for Breakfast. What's the reason for that? Well, quite simply, I'm extremely busy, time is valuable and by focusing on developing quality relationship and strategic partnerships, I believe my return will be much greater.
Already this year I have been referred to genuine and lucrative business opportunties through my contacts within these groups and intend that the rest of the year will continue on this manner. Perhaps now, more than ever it's time to ask yourself what return do you get on your investment of both time and money? Do you actually know how much you spend and what gross profit you've got back in return. If not, then please do get your own referral tracker going as that way you can really tell whether it's been 'money well spent!'
2009 will be a challenging business year but with the correct focus and strategy (plus positive determination of course) there's no reason whatsoever why it can't be a good year. In times of recession or downturn, opportunties still exist but if you're not looking for them you won't find them!
So be bold, make your network 'work' and here's to a rewarding and enjoyable 2009!
